Picking holes… in everything

Interesting how studying for ‘consumer insights’ often results in understanding ourselves.

Did you know that we humans have a ‘negativity bias’? It means we not only overemphasize what’s bad around us, but also take what is good very quickly for granted after a short window of gratitude. Notice how quickly, the resort that felt breathtaking on day one starts feeling normal within a day or two of stay? Combine this with our tendency to brood over negative thoughts and you realize that people with a predominantly positive predisposition are a rarity indeed. Interestingly, this very tendency has helped humans evolve and strive to make things better infinitely.

Besides creating marketing opportunities for the new & improved stuff. It’s just that we need to be aware of our tendency to do this, and handle it too. So this Diwali (or anytime in the future) if you catch yourself brooding over stuff, just remind yourself of this typical human trait and look for much in your life that you have to be thankful for.

Happy Diwali! 🪔
